A tree is cut down, CRAC! and a man makes a rocking chair for his sweetheart. The chair rocks the expectant mother and then her newborn baby, eventually becoming whatever the children’s imaginations require. In one way or another, the rocking chair sees a loving couple through all the stages of their lives. But modernity encroaches. The chair is thrown away, but then reclaimed to provide an island of calm for an employee at an art gallery. The film celebrates a rapidly disappearing if not altogether lost way of life. Frédéric Back used the constant presence of the rocking chair in the film to remind us of themes close to his heart: the crafts, traditions, home-made games and values of days gone by. Colours, music and dance evoke joy. The voices of children and adults sound like musical instruments.

ART

• To introduce the participants to new art concepts and
   vocabulary.
• To have them use the visual arts as a form of communication.
• To give participants an opportunity to create art.
• To have them learn and apply elements of art and design.
• To have them experiment with art materials, techniques and
   processes.
• To have them relate the arts to the themes in Crac!.
• To have participants share their art and their opinions
   with others.

All activities are self-contained units. Choose a 1-hour activity or design a long-term project encompassing various themes that can be tied to the curriculum or program.*

*It is recommended that participants watch the film prior to the first activity.
